A public meeting has been called in Kaikohe tomorrow evening to discuss ways of beautifying the Far North town and encouraging more people to shop there.
Far North District councillor and Kaikohe resident Sally Macauley is calling for a "a total remake" of the town.
Despite having one of the busiest main streets of any Far North town - State Highway 12 runs through the town centre - many people drove through without stopping.
The problem was becoming more urgent with the Pou Herenga Tai/Twin Coast Cycle Trail expected to bring more visitors into the area. Kaikohe, along with Kawakawa and Okaihau, is one of the main hubs on the trail.
Mrs Macauley said the town's appearance and lack of maintenance were her greatest concerns.
