Five Whangarei men delivered Wild West justice to two family members and two friends caught pinching cannabis.
The five men kidnapped and beat the four teenagers.
But the real law decided that was inappropriate and the five have been sentenced to terms in prison.
Whangarei District Court Judge John McDonald yesterday said Lawrence
De Goey, Jacob De Goey, Jeffrey De Goey, Clement Turner and Josef Martinac had a "warped sense" that it was their right to deal out rough justice.
He sentenced them to prison terms for their roles in the March 2004 kidnappings and assaults on the teens who were then aged 15-17.
"It was some sort of frontier or Wild West justice you were looking to deal out to those boys," he said.
Judge McDonald said the four "lads" - Dillan De Goey, Selwyn Huxtable and two friends - were traumatised by their ordeal that had begun when they stopped their vehicle on the roadside after visiting a secret cannabis crop belonging to Lawrence De Goey (Dillan's uncle) along Whatatiri Rd, near Whangarei.
Martinac and Turner had turned up, assaulted the group and taken their keys.
They had left and after consulting Lawrence De Goey took the four victims to Lawrence De Goey's property.
"They were taken to a barn and over the next hours were subjected to violence, threats and were taped up. Here were four young men - better described as boys - on a foolish expedition to get cannabis."
Jeffrey De Goey (Lawrence's brother) arrived later.
The "lads" were made to harvest the cannabis crop then let go the next morning and told not to tell anybody what had happened.
Victim impact statements they had made indicated they had been "terrified".
In sentencing the five, Judge McDonald said kidnapping required a "strong response". However, he took into account their guilty pleas partway through the trial.
He sentenced Lawrence De Goey - who had accepted "primary responsibility" for the incident - to serve three years and three months in prison. His sentence comprised three years for four counts of kidnapping, 12 months for injuring with intent, and 12 months for assault with intent - all to be served concurrently - and three months for cultivating cannabis, to be served in addition.
Josef Martinac, Clement Turner and Jacob De Goey were sentenced to serve two years in prison - two years for four kidnapping charges, 12 months for injuring with intent and 12 months for assault with intent, all to be served concurrently. Jeffrey De Goey was sentenced to 12 months prison for four counts of kidnapping. All but Lawrence De Goey were granted leave to apply for home detention.
Speaking outside court after the sentencing, Dillan De Goey's parents, Tanya and Peter De Goey, said they were relieved the sentencing was over. Mrs De Goey said her son had barely gone out for the first year after the kidnapping. He still had a scar on his leg where he was bashed with a shovel that night.
Dillan was "really angry" about what had happened at the time, but was now getting on with his life.
