A Whangarei father of 10 children has been jailed for raping a 20-year-old woman.
Shaun Campbell Duncan, 46, was sentenced to seven years, nine months' jail when he appeared before Justice Judith Potter in the High Court at Whangarei yesterday.
In a victim impact statement read to the court the woman said
she was proud of herself for going through the legal process, although it was extremely painful and frustrating, but hoped it encouraged others to stand up against rape.
The psychological impact on her was ongoing.
"I feel like I have no soul some days. I can't breathe and don't know why I am here," she said.
"I'm sickened by what he has done to me. I feel dirty."
She had starved herself for days, hurt herself and had continuous feelings of being dirty.
She described herself as a loner but since being raped had isolated herself in a new flat.
"The curtains are drawn all the time. Darkness is my safety."
She also drank to excess so she could feel "numb" and go to sleep.
Justice Potter said Duncan had invited the woman to his flat to help him with a DVD player. They shared a few drinks and he asked if he could return with the woman to her house.
There they had more drinks. While the woman was in the toilet Duncan locked the door, pulled the curtains, switched off the lights and turned up the music.
Duncan then shook the woman, took off her clothing, forced her on to the bed, held her hands above her head and raped her.
The 10-minute ordeal ended when neighbours started knocking on the door.
Duncan admitted having sex with the woman but said she had come on to him.
Justice Potter said Duncan had "a lamentable history of offending".
Over 27 years he had amassed 108 convictions which included 26 for dishonesty, 18 violence offences and 14 relating to alcohol, and four assault convictions included two of assaulting a female.
In 1999 and then again in 2003 he was convicted of indecent assault on a female.
Justice Potter said Duncan's children were aged between 2 and 17 years and his wife would not let him near them after he had been drinking.
Their relationship had been on-and-off over 17 years.
Duncan had a handwritten letter presented to the court just before being sentenced in which he expressed remorse for the victim and his own family.
He also said he was ashamed of what he had done.
