HBHS Hastings Boys' High has five teams away during tournament week. The first two days have produced some great results against some very tough opponents.
The hockey are the only undefeated side in their pool in the Coaches Cup in Albany with two wins on the first day and an excellent 4-3 win against Te Puke High School. Callum Bailey has been a central figure in a team that is functioning well.
Soccer made an impressive start against Waitaki with a 5-1 win but went down narrowly to Malborough and lost to McClean College 3-0. Results in pool play have been close but the Mick Darmody coached side will need to win their remaining games to progress through to the cup round. The Basketball has cruised through their early pool games crushing St Johns 71-39 and Hertaunga 99-67. Today they struggled for rhythm against Hawera but won 74-64 and then convincingly beat Francis Douglas 68-44. Curtis Wootens lads are unlikely to get much opposition until crossovers where Mana College and New Plymouth Boys High School have been in good form.
The Junior A basketball also remain unbeaten with another impressive performance against Hutt Valley High School winning 72-56. The under 15 rugby have been having a torrid time losing heavily to Christchurch Boys High School and then a classy Hamilton side scored three second half tries to win 22-5. To the lads credit they picked themselves up against Wellington College but a last minute try saw them winless with a 25-20 loss. They play St Pats (Town) in today in the section 2 playoffs. Players to shine are busy wing Egotiz Kamura and year 9 student Sam Macklow has been outstanding.
