"Dan The Man" was the predictable star as Westshore won Surf Lifesaving Hawke's Bay's championships at Waimarama on Saturday.
New Zealand representative Dan Moodie proved he had well and truly recovered from an infection which saw him miss the second day of the National League at Mount Maunganui earlier this month. He won the open and under-19 men's ironmans, the open and under-19 board races, the under-19 ski race and under-19 tube rescue with his brother Nick who won the under-16 board race.
Moodie's Westshore club won the top club title with 345 points. Waimarama were second with 187, Pacific third with 66 and Ocean Beach Kiwi fourth with 51.
Considering Westshore's world ski race champion and third ranked ironwoman Nikki Cox was in Australia competing at the world interclub championships this was a mighty feat.
Other major contributors to Westshore's victory included Avril Turvey who won the under-19 and under-16 girls surf races, the under-19 run-swim-run, under-16 ski race, under-19 and under-16 board rescues and under-19 tube rescue with Madeline Diver who the under-16 beach sprint, board race and diamond lady events along with the under-19 ironwoman; Hamish Beattie who won the under-16 ironman, Shanan Miles the open ski race, Jess Berridge-Hart who won the open women's board race, ski race and ironwoman titles as well as the board rescue title with Chantelle Cowlrick who took out the open women's surf race, run-swim-run titles as well as the tube rescue title with Amy Vaughan.
Ngati Kahungunu's 2005 Sportsperson of the Year Candis Cardie made the most of her first Hawke's Bay champs with Westshore by winning the open and under-19 beach sprint and beach flags titles.
Waimarama's top performers included Alicia McCormack who won the under-19 ironwoman, Ben Cross the open and under-19 beach flags, Sam Spencer the under-16 boys ski race and Jason Harman the under-19 beach sprint title and under-16 board rescue title with Brooke Welch.
Pacific's Charlotte Matthews and Kate O'Malley won titles in the under-19 ski race and under-16 beach flags respectively.
Ocean Beach Kiwi's best performers were Larissa Cowlrick who won the under-19 board race; Ashton Tuck who won the under-16 beach sprint and flags title, Chris Benson the under-16 surf race title and Shane Bennett the open men's beach sprint.
