Rovers v Upper Hutt City

Park Island, Napier

Central League soccer

Think seven and it conjures images of the deadly sins, also commonly referred to as the capital vices or cardinal sins, that biblically Solomon warned Christian followers about in the Book of Proverbs.

In 1995 Hollywood put
its own twist to Seven with actors Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt exposing the morbid mindset of serial killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey).

Those harrowing scenes from the commercial blockbuster were enough to make anyone choke on their potato crisps and fizzy drinks.

Now add to that the spectre of seven for the Bluewater Napier City Rovers after last Sunday's 7-0 Central League soccer flogging at the hands of Wairarapa United at Carterton.

While not as chilling as the scenes from the movie, suffice it to say it'll take something special to exorcise those demons especially from the more fragile, youthful minds in the Blues' squad.

"Seven is certainly not on my list of winning Lotto numbers last weekend," Rovers coach Grant Hastings said yesterday before they host Upper Hutt City at Bluewater Stadium, Park Island, tomorrow in a 2pm kickoff.

Okay, so last weekend's Blues campaigners were missing key elements due to injuries, unavailabilities as well as the suspension of captain Bill Robertson.

Hastings will be the first one to agree the Rovers desperately need continuity - hold on, there were SEVEN players unavailable last Sunday.

Take a look at the photo of last year's league title-winning Blues side, he reckons, and there's barely SEVEN of them still there in this winter's squad.

Tomorrow, against Upper Hutt - who the Rovers clinically disposed of 4-1 on May 25 in Wellington - there's some encouraging news.

Robertson returns to marshal a defence that will resemble something more like what the Rovers should have tabled at Howard Booth Park last Sunday.

English import Aaron Jones is still injured but veteran Regan Cameron is back on the bench.

Napier Boys' High School rookie Bayley Chadderton is also in the mix despite a rigorous three-day Super 8 tournament for his school this week.

Veteran David Gearey, who hobbled off with Reece Brew running on, is also putting on his shin pads.

"Look, last Sunday our back four were simply the midfield four who defend differently in that they follow the ball up the park when they should be sitting deep to defend against a team like Wairarapa," Hastings said.

Striker Andy Bevin, who was jetting back to his United States College today, is out of the equation after stoking the fire in a sluggish engine room last Sunday.

Veterans Stu Wilson and Andy Pickering (stepping up from the ComputerCare Premiership) are available but not so Wilson's injured brother, Danny, who can fill the boots of a defender or striker with aplomb at the winter league level.

Having dropped out of the Chatham Cup campaign and not looking like securing a top-four rung of the Central League ladder, what is the Rovers' motivation?

Pride? Respectability, perhaps?

"Yes that, but more so the motivation to win because we have four more games to go so we owe it to our club and its supporters because they expect that from us with some respectability."

Robertson said lack of depth was not an excuse as last Sunday was "disappointing and simply unacceptable".

"We just can't be allowing that to happen again."

Chilean Pedro Garcias has the services of former Rovers coach Charlie Howe as his assistant and sons Peter and Rhys Howe are also playing for Upper Hutt.

Coach Garcias is attempting to inject some South American flair to his side with the help of seasoned player Louis Corrales.

Hastings and Robertson have dispelled any suggestions the Rovers players were sympathetic towards Wairarapa's disqualification in the knockout cup because they were "no more than interested observers" as administrators lodged protests and counter claims.

Says Robertson: "Even before the [Chatham Cup] game kicked off here we knew they were potentially playing an ineligible player [Brian Kalteck]."

NZ Football upheld that decision and it was "the right one".
