The Havelock North High School cricket team have moved a step closer to schoolgirl supremacy in the country.
The pupils beat Otago Girls High School by 76 runs yesterday in their opening game in group B played at the Canterbury University grounds in Ilam.
They play Wellington Girls College today and Whangarei Girls High School tomorrow in the hope of becoming top qualifiers in their pool to play in the New Zealand Community Trust Cup final on Friday.
"It was raining pretty hard last night and the pitch at Ilam is rain sodden so they are trying to get hold of an artificial pitch around Christchurch for us to play,"
Havelock coach Peter Hensman told SportToday this morning. Yesterday, Otago won the toss and put HNHS in to bat. The Bay schoolgirls amassed 124-8 in the 40-over match. New Bay women's rep, Amy Foster, top scored with 35 runs while Sam Guillen (22), Penny-Rose Wiggins (21) and Emma Keong (17) added to the total.
HNHS skittled Otago for 48 with Sally Hensman claiming three wickets off her seven overs, including four maidens, for three runs. Sanika Rangnekar and Olivia Gregory were also economical, taking two wickets each.
In the other group B match, Whangarei Girls' High hammered Wellington by 116 runs.
Three-time champions and favourites New Plymouth High, in group A, had a seven-wicket win over hosts Marian College yesterday.
Westlake Girls High, of Auckland, beat Tauranga Girls College by 90 runs.
