From the boundary, it all looked innocuous enough. With the final overs rapidly ticking by, Central Districts were still in with a slim chance of taking an unlikely outright win off Canterbury on day two of the national under-17 tournament at Nelson Park, especially with Simon Wraight hitting the ballso well. But then disaster struck. With the ball having been hit down the ground, Wraight responded to the handful of steps taken down the wicket by his partner in search of a second run, by taking just of a couple of his own. By then the throw was on its way from long-off and despite being no more than a yard out of his ground, Wraight couldn't alter his momentum in time and was run out at the bowler's end for 96. That effectively ended CD's chase of 256 and they finished 22 runs short on 234 for eight. Earlier in the day, CD had been rolled for 62 in its first dig, 206 behind Canterbury. The visitors then declared their second innings closed at 48 for three, leaving CD 256 to get. So first-innings points went to Canterbury, ditto Auckland and Otago who both ended up drawing their matches against Wellington and Northern Districts, respectively.
