There was potential to make serious money at the Woodville Races on May 10, if the punter was in the know, because some very good horses were sprinkled through the fields of the seven races.
The day started with Zedac winning race one and its jockey Dylan Turner going onto win the second with Zed Leppelin, both obviously sired by the very good stallion Zed. Owner of Zed Leppelin, Peter Robertson, was delighted saying "the feeling can't get any better than winning" and complimented both the jockey and the track for being in such fine condition.
The track rated "a fast five" due to the good previous week of weather and some good times were posted.
The race three winner was Under the Bridge, sired by Mettre En Jeu. Owner Adaire Auret said Mettre En Jeu has sired six flat track horses all of which are doing well, the oldest Over the River having just recorded its19th win.
She received her bottle of wine from Tim Mordaunt, principal of race sponsor Property Brokers. Tim had also sponsored his 60-strong Property Brokers team to the races for the day saying "it is quite special to come for a day's racing at a track in the heart of Property Brokers country".
One of his guests struck it lucky in the fourth race, picking Murtle to win after her cousin of the same name rang her from Central Otago. It paid well having no form in the book and not having raced since November.
In race five another outsider, Smiling Proud, bolted in to pay $24 for the win. Thinking punters should have recognised the top stable name of Baker and Forsman from Cambridge and concluded the horse had not come all this way to lose.
Bolstered by the Property Brokers team and encouraged by a fine day on a fast track, the crowd was good for an event not usually on the Pahiatua-Woodville Racing Club calendar.
