A woman was airlifted to hospital after she fell into a river and struck her head on a rock at a Hawkes Bay camping site.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter was called to the accident at Te Haroto, about 60km northwest of Napier, late last night.

The 23-year-old woman accidentally fell into the Mohaka River and was knocked unconscious as she struck her head on a rock.
