The last day of the school holidays was a wet one but the weather is set to improve this week.

A heavy rain watch was in place for Hawke's Bay yesterday and overnight due to a complex low which is slowly moving across the country.

This low was expected to affect New Zealand yesterday and today before slowly clearing tomorrow.

MetService meteorologist Melissa Oosterwijk said the weather system had brought a lot of rain to the region with 15-20mm being recorded between 7am and 7pm at Hawke's Bay Airport, Napier, yesterday.

Saturday wasn't as bad with only about 5mm from 6am to 12am being recorded.

This month had been reasonably dry with yesterday's rainfall being the highest since April 10 when there was 26.6mm.

Yesterday's recordings showed quite a lot of rain for Hawke's Bay which tended to be sunnier due to being on the east coast, she said.

The heavy rain watch is set to expire this morning, with showers dying off.

"[Yesterday] was the main day of rain, we're not expecting quite as much [today]."

Tomorrow is set to be a bit showery but no as heavy or as intense as yesterday, she said.

The high amount of rain yesterday was due to a low centre with multiple bands of rain slowly moving across the country.

"Because it is not moving very fast that's why there's been a lot of rainfall."

Tomorrow night a front looks like it will be moving up from the South Island bringing with it some cloud, rain and cooler overnight temperatures.

This was not unusual for autumn because the weather was not as settled as summer and there was always something else coming, she said.

Temperatures were relatively mild in Napier on Saturday and yesterday with highs of 19C and a low of 9C on Saturday and 13C yesterday.

Today is expected to reach 21C and only drop to 12C overnight but tomorrow will be slightly cooler with a high of 18C and low of 9C.

Wednesday is expected to reach a maximum of 16C and minimum of 8C while Thursday's temperatures are set to be a high of 15C and low of 6C.
