Not one, not two, but hundreds of water balloons top the list of 10 best gifts in Hawke's Bay this Christmas.

Bunch O Balloons come pre-tied and can be filled in 60 seconds with one turn of the tap.

Napier Toy World owner David Copestake said girls, boys and the whole family could enjoy this gimmick.

Kiwi family the Mowbrays invented this nifty contraption through their successful toy business, Zuru.

Mr Copestake said: "Water balloons are a classic toy, but they've just made them cooler. The whole family can have fun with them Christmas Day, that's the advantage of having Christmas in the summer."

The balloons were "crazy already, they've only been selling for a month". Bunch O Balloons sell for around $20.00.

But getting soaked on Christmas Day is not for everyone and the toy store owner said magical unicorn Star Lily was sure to please. With her fluttering eyes and flapping wings, this mystical creature responded to voice and touch with more than 100 sound and motion combinations.

For boys who prefer inside fun, classic Lego was still a favourite.

Onward Cycles and Toys owner Hugh Ross said after nearly 40 years in the business, people still went for the traditional toy.

"Parents often buy what they remember from their childhood for their children," he said.

He said wooden toys were making a comeback as well as Star Wars paraphernalia with the new movie hitting screens in December.

For men, a new PowerAll power pack is sure to please. The hand-sized charger can be taken anywhere and has the ability to charge both cars and cellphones.

Havelock North boutique gift store Adamo's manager, Jo Scarfe, said bath and body sets were a no-fail option for the ladies. A selection of Linden Leaves Christmas themed sets were "walking out the door," she said.

For women after a more practical gift, New Zealand-made thunder pants are sure to be a treat. The organic cotton underwear is guaranteed to fit every natural curve and never sag. Adult gifts start around the $30 mark while toys can be picked up from around $20.
