The beach may not be the best place to be this weekend, despite highs in the low 20s, says MetService forecaster Rebekah LaBar.
A jacket should be kept close at hand. "It is not going to be terribly cool but there will be some rain and showers," she said.
Yesterday'ssea breeze should pick up again today, with fine, dry weather and a high of 23C for Napier and 24C for Hastings.
An easterly brought welcome showers to the region on Wednesday night and inconsistent precipitation was likely to resume this weekend, she said.
A front heading north was due tomorrow morning, bringing rain to a dry Hawke's Bay and 15km/h winds. "There is a pretty fresh southerly coming in Saturday morning but by about midday rain will generally be gone," she said.
The high should be about 20C "but there will still be some showers around" as the southerly flow continued into Sunday, "which will probably not be the most pleasant day" for the beach.
"The main weathermaker will be out of the way by then and there will be a high that is building across the country, but there will be a few showers lingering."
Sunday's breeze would ease, becoming a "modest" southwesterly flow.
