Tired of toting heavy bags? Naturists recommend the "nakation" as the best way to travel light - but don't forget your hat.
More than 100 naturists gathered at the Hawke's Bay Naturist Club for the 59th NZ Naturist Federation festival, which finished yesterday.
Federation communications officer Glenne Findon said naturism was a
lifestyle and philosophy of its own and was not all about lying in the sun.
"It is a way of life, in harmony with nature," she said. "It is about acceptance of all people no matter what their appearance."
There was no risk of boredom with a bus tour, hypnotist, retro games and other activities.
After a full week of being able to dress or not dress, as they wished, it was "awful" to put clothes on to travel to town, Ms Findon said.
Naturism boosted confidence and self-esteem - and vitamin D levels, she said.
A lot of misconceptions used to be held about naturists but people now were more accepting of other lifestyles.
"In this hot and sticky weather it's more sensible and comfortable to take your clothes off," Ms Findon said. "People tend to think we're naked all the time but we put clothes on if it's cold."
Sun safety was important and Cancer Society umbrellas and sunblock protected the naturists from burning.
The Bay's sunny weather came through for the festival, so no one had to cover up.
