Concord Band hosts the popular Hawke's Bay Festival of Bands.
This Sunday, June 19, 15 concert and brass bands from around Hawke's Bay, Waikato and Manawatu will gather in the Lowe Family Performing Arts Centre at Lindisfarne College to participate in the popular Hawke's Bay Festival of Bands, adjudicated by the world renowned Dr Kenneth Dye from the University ofNotre Dame, US.
Each band will give a 30 minute programme competing for gold, silver and bronze awards together with best soloist and most entertaining performance prizes on offer.
Hosted by the Concord Bands, comprising musicians from both Lindisfarne College and Hastings Girls' High School, this KBB Music sponsored event includes the Concord Bands, Bay Cities' Symphonic, Deco Bay Brass, Napier Technical Memorial, Napier Boys' High School Concert and Jazz Bands, Palmerston North Boys' High School Concert and Stage Bands, Waikato Youth, Havelock North High and Intermediate Schools' Bands and three bands from Freyberg High School, Palmerston North, including their Stage Band.
"The festival performances will once again be entertainment based with many bands featuring, not only their standard repertoire, but also a woodwind, brass, percussion or vocal soloist with band accompaniment," says the director of music at Lindisfarne College, John Snowling.
Ken Dye is a staff writer for several publishers and has served as composer/arranger for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Band and pops arranger for the Dallas Symphony. His writing activities have produced over 1800 works for band and orchestra, performed throughout the United States and overseas.
Dr Dye also serves as a concurrent professor of computer applications, developing the course Music through Technology, and teaches music from a business perspective in a course entitled The Business of Music.
Most recently his research has involved the musical history of the Olympics and he has incorporated it into a new course: Music and the Olympics: A Soundtrack for Competition, Ceremony and Celebration.
The band festival performances are from 9am until 5pm. Door sales admission $5. Food and refreshments are available throughout the day.
