Two people were taken to hospital following a collision at a Hawke's Bay intersection which saw one vehicle smash into a lamp post.

The crash occurred about 8.30am yesterday at the intersection of McLean St and Avenue Rd in Hastings.

Hawke's Bay Road Policing Team constable Bob Jones said early investigations suggested a vehicle travelling on McLean St had failed to give way to one travelling on Avenue Rd.

"We are still investigating but it looks like the McLean St vehicle failed to give way."

He said the two people taken to hospital received minor injuries.

He said the occupants, who were from Flaxmere amtaitnd Napier, were "more than lucky" to escape with only minor injuries.
