Tararua RDA provides interaction with horses to increase ability, independence and self-worth for children and adults with physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges.

Tararua RDA provides interaction with horses to increase ability, independence and self-worth for children and adults with physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges.

Tararua RDA is a member group of the New Zealand Riding for the Disabled Association, a volunteer, not-for-profit organisation providing equine experiences for people with a range of disabilities and needs.

RDA provides interaction with horses to develop increased ability, independence and self-worth for children and adults with physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges.

The Tararua RDA "Time to Ride" programme is based at their facility on Carisbrook Rd in Mangatainoka, supported by a team of local people who volunteer their time.

As NZRDA is not government funded, the organisation relies heavily on the support of the community through donations, sponsored horses and volunteers.

Funds raised from Sunday's trek will go towards paying for Tararua RDA's "horse caretaker", after the organisation missed out on a grant that usually pays for the position.

"We are now flat out trying to raise $8000 to replace the loss of that grant," Judy Edmonds of Tararua RDA said.

Sunday's trek takes in some steep hills and panoramic views, from a property on the Pahiatua/Pongaroa Rd.

"Some of the hills are steep," said Edmonds, "but it's well worth it."

The trek rides out at 9am from 1724 Pahiatua/Pongaroa Rd, this Sunday, May 20, and costs $50, which includes morning tea and lunch.

To register for the trek, phone Conrad on 06 376 7329 (evenings).

For people who can't make it to the trek but still want to contribute, contact Tararua RDA "Time to Ride" on Facebook for details of how to donate or sponsor one of the RDA's riders, or one of their therapy horses.
