A vegetable-laden trailer crashed into the base of a power pole, breaking it at its base, on State Highway 2 just south of Bay View yesterday.

The trailer, carrying vegetables, bread and a load of timber came loose on the highway forcing the car and its load off the road at about 3.30pm

Senior Constable Scott Quate said the trailer started fish tailing before it forced the driver to take evasive action and leave the road.

"He [driver] has done really well to keep the trailer to that side of the road and get it onto the grass, rather than straight in front of the oncoming traffic."

The driver of the car said the trailer appeared to unhinge before the impact of the crash took it right off the tow ball. He said he was more worried about what his uncle would say about the food that had spilled.
