Former Napier bodybuilder and businessman Steve Miller has been killed in Thailand.
One of Mr Miller's friends in Napier heard of his death last Thursday and said he had been told he had been shot while playing golf, in what appeared to be a set-up killing over money.
He had heard that
a woman, who Mr Miller met about eight months ago, had been arrested along with a man, although his former wife could not confirm that.
Speaking from Bangkok, Mr Miller's former wife Megan said she was aware there were differing stories emerging about what had happened, but she was still awaiting the official story.
She said New Zealand police liaison officers in Bangkok were preparing a statement.
"It is all so unreal at the moment. We are going to see him today at the undertakers and there will be a ceremony here in Thailand tomorrow."
She said after cremation his ashes would be brought back to Napier for a service, but was unsure when that would be.
"I am going to go and see the place where it happened.
"I just want to go there," she said.
She described her feelings as being of "absolute devastation" as she had remained close friends with her former husband since their divorce some years ago.
Thirty-nine year-old Mr Miller had been living in Thailand for about seven years.
One of his mates who has known him for 20 years, Thomas Heremia, said Mr Miller had set out for Thailand both to start new business ventures, including property, but also, in a way, to "find his roots."
Mr Miller was part-Asian, part-Maori.
The last time Mr Heremia saw his old friend was about 3 1/2 years ago.
"He still had business dealings here."
But last Thursday Mr Heremia received a phone call from another of Mr Miller's mates telling him he would never meet up with his friend again.
He could not immediately take in what he heard.
"It was one of those calls when you go: 'I trust I didn't hear that right'," he said today.
He said Mr Miller had a lot of friends and business associates in Hawke's Bay and the feeling was one of disbelief and shock at what had happened.
"This is just so devastating for the family," he said, adding that Mr Miller's mother and a sister had raced to Thailand to both find out what had happened and also bring their son and brother home.
Mr Heremia had been mates with Mr Miller since both attended Wycliffe Intermediate School in Onekawa.
They stayed friends through high school, and Mr Miller had gone out with Mr Heremia's sister.
Both worked the doors of pubs doing security work, while Mr Miller developed a growing interest in body building and martial arts.
The feeling at the Sparta Health and Fitness centre, where Mr Miller trained, has been sombre and tinged with disbelief since the news emerged.
One staff member said she had seen "big macho bodybuilders" bursting into tears after getting the news of their old mate's death.
"It's just horrific," she said.
"He had so many friends.
Fitness specialist Dion Roberts said he first met Mr Miller five or six years ago and received the news with disbelief. "Everyone who knows Steve is just shocked."
Mr Heremia said he would always remember his long-time friend as just simply a very good man and a good mate.
"This news has just left life in a bit of a blur.
"It's hard to take in."
