Teenagers stranded on coast near Waimarama

Two teenagers have been found after they went missing when a group became stuck in the surf in Waimarama on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called near Red Rock, about 2km south of Waimarama, about 4.30pm.

Police said they received reports of three male teenagers in difficulty near the rocks due to high tide.

One managed to swim back to shore, near the main part of the beach, but two were later unaccounted for.

Police confirmed the other two teenagers managed to make it to land and scale steep farmland, and were located about 7.40pm.

A police spokeswoman said LandSAR had also been deployed.

A witness at the scene said one male who had been found was seen embracing his parents on the beach, visibly upset.

Police at the scene were unable to provide further details.
