A 15-year-old was stabbed after a party got out of control in a Napier suburb at the weekend.

The teenager is in a stable condition in Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital after undergoing surgery yesterday for multiple stab wounds to his chest, neck and back. Police say he was attacked near the intersection of York Ave and Lancaster St in Tamatea around 1am on Sunday.

Police were called to a party that had got out of control in York Ave around 12.30am, where they had to move on an estimated 150-200 young people. The stabbing occurred a short time later, during an altercation with a group of youths after a Give Way sign was pulled down.

Detective Stacey Bailey said police were keen to speak to anyone who had seen the 15-year-old stabbed or the altercation near the intersection with Lancaster St. Police are yet to find the weapon used in the attack and are asking residents in the area to report any broken bottles they find on their property that may have been used in the attack.

Police are once again urging constraint around alcohol and are reminding those holding a party to make sure they are well controlled and organised.

"Too often we see violence such as this stabbing resulting from too much alcohol - and invariably parties are involved. Youth in particular need to take more personal responsibility for their actions, control their drinking and realise that there are consequences for their behaviour.

"In this case, we have a young man who was seriously injured for no apparent reason. Police resources were fully stretched getting the party under control," Ms Bailey said.

Anyone with information about the stabbing should contact Ms Bailey at Hawke's Bay Police on 06 8310700. Information can also be left anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
