Taradale’s new police base sprung up almost overnight.

The two-storey building on Gloucester St is made of 19 modules, which started arriving on trucks last Thursday.

By Friday, all the modules were slotted into place to create the eye-catching building.

The police base replaces an old - and much smaller - police station which closed on the same site in 2023.

Construction company Niche is behind the build.

Niche has a large factory in Petone, Lower Hutt, where the modules were constructed and fitted out.

Framing from Napier company Scottsdale Construction, a leader in steel framing technology, was included in the design.

Police plan to move into the new base around the end of April, and the base will accommodate up to 50 police staff.

It will help relieve pressure on workspace for police staff across Hawke’s Bay.

Taradale is located in a prime location, between the Napier and Hastings police stations.

Like the old station, the new Taradale police base will not have front counter services.

“We’re looking forward to this new phase for police in Taradale,” Hawke’s Bay area commander Inspector Lincoln Sycamore said, when the project was announced last year.

Scottsdale Construction representative Lance Curry said the modular design, which included their framing technology, was often used overseas, and for it to be used “in our backyard is really nice to see”.
