The Havelock North volunteer fire brigade was called to a suspicious fire at Havelock North Intermediate last night.
Deputy chief fire officer Rodney Triplow said the fire was small and caused no damage.
"It was just a clump of grass that had been pulled out of the ground, [put] on a path next to a classroom and lit."
The matter has been passed onto police.
