Eight Havelock North High School students have been recognised for their sporting prowess.

Athletes were selected as sports ambassadors for the school, falling under the Jarrod Cunningham Sports Academy umbrella.

Requirements went beyond obvious talents in their field. They also had to demonstrate a good attitude and be positive members of the school community.

"This is the first time we have announced the ambassadors, it's a new initiative taking high performing athletes and teaching them to be role models who lift others and raise the profile of sport in the school," Havelock North High School Sports Academy manager Fiona Goff said.

The inaugural group features canoeist Elise Legarth; hockey players Sean Morrison and Callum Wilkie; 100m to 200m track star Georgia Hulls; Orienteerer Dylan Kirk; swimmer Joseph Belcher; cricketer Harry Young; track and field competitor and netballer Georgia Rathbone. The senior students were presented with a badge to mark their achievement during a special assembly yesterday.

They started preparing straight away with a toast masters speaking course to boost confidence in the public speaking arena.

Also new this year is an Athlete Development programme for aspiring sportsmen and women in Year 9 and 10, with the aim of educating, motivating, challenging and inspiring. The Academy provides knowledge to improve skills across all sporting codes using before school training sessions, educational workshops and guest speakers.
