Napier's six mayoral candidates left the starting gate in a straight line in a promising election campaign introduction in front of more than 100 Grey Power members and friends in Taradale yesterday.

All six fronted starter Prof Robin Gwynn, who was elected in 2004 to a three-year term on the council despite an unsuccessful lone challenge to the second term of now-departing Mayor Barbara Arnott.

Yesterday, the All Saints Church hall in Taradale was full for the meeting which took place just four days after nominations closed, although the intentions of all six had been known for more than seven weeks.

Grey Power president Laurie Jenkin said he was pleased with the response, and all candidates "gave a good account of themselves" as they spoke for 6-7 minutes each, and had a minute to answer each of four questions selected by the Grey Power committee.

It included views on local government amalgamation.

A second meeting will be held for the Mayoral candidates at Princess Alexander retirement Village next Tuesday night.
