MetService has issued a new severe weather watch for tomorrow ahead of expected downpours and gales.

Severe gales were expected south of Napier, and were also possible on the west coast of the North Island, and in Wellington, the Wairarapa, western Nelson the Marlborough Sounds and the Tararua district.

Another active front is forecast to cross the country, bringing a burst of heavy, thundery rain to western parts and gales to central areas.

Heavy, thundery rain is possible in Westland, Buller, the Tararua Ranges and at Mt Taranaki.

Meanwhile, westerly gales are expected to pass south of the South Island overnight.
