One person has died following a second serious crash in the Dannevirke area in less than 12 hours.

The crash happened near the intersection of Kearney and Top Grass roads, in rural country between Woodville and Dannevirke.

Police said it was reported at 5.50am on Sunday, but may have happened overnight.

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance and the road will be closed while a scene examination is carried out, and motorists were being asked to take alternative routes.

One person has been airlifted to hospital and five others were injured following the earlier crash about 5.45pm on Saturday, crash on State Highway 2 between Dannevirke and Matamau.

Police said four vehicles were involved, and the status of the six injured ranges from moderate to critical.

The highway north of Dannevirke, to State Highway 2 is closed between Ruahine St and Otanga Rd.
