Rugby player still fighting for life

Napier Old boys Marist Player John Taitoko remains in a critical condition.

Napier Old Boys' Marist senior thirds player John Taitoko, 28, is still in intensive care fighting for his life after collapsing during a rugby match on Saturday.

Mr Taitoko was playing Dannevirke club Aotea at Park Island when he keeled over during the first half.

Referee Hans Seitzinger called the match off and both teams shared the competition points.

The front rower has been in the intensive care unit since arriving at Hawke's Bay Hospital on Saturday.

He was still in a critical condition, a spokesman said today.

Mr Taitoko has been part of Napier Old Boys' Marist for the past 12 years and was described as a very loyal member.

He and his partner have an 8-month-old son.
