Amazing clients and a cool team of consultants, architects and interior designers helped Redmond Builders win the Supreme Award at the East Coast & Hawke's Bay Registered Master Builders 2021 House of the Year competition.

Business owner Ben Redmond said it was one of the most seamless jobs he had ever worked on.

"The house is stunning and that mostly comes down to the fact the owners picked a special team and then put their trust in them to do their job," Redmond said.

His business, which consists of a small team of seven including himself, also won a Gold Award, Pink Batts Craftsmanship Award and APL Sustainable Excellence Award, alongside taking out the Resene New Home over $2 million category.

"It just fantastic and, while it was disappointing that we didn't get to go to the gala evening, the Master Builders team pulled off a virtual screening of the awards on short notice. It was fun to sit down with my girls to watch it."

Redmond says the attention to detail in this high-end home was what made it stand out.

"The trick with attention to detail is that they don't stand out because they are well-thought-out."

It's the fourth time Redmond Builders, which has been operating since 2005, has won the Supreme award - three times for a new build and once for a renovation.

Redmond said he always has an apprentice working for him and looks for people who will bring good energy to a site.

"They also have to be good communicators and work efficiently and smartly. The building industry can be tricky, so you also need to be patient."

He says Hawke's Bay had some great builders in the industry, a fact reflected in the level of achievement in these awards.

"Hawke's Bay should be proud of itself."

The judges said the winning house had excellent design and attention to detail present in every aspect. There is a welcoming entry, and the layout of the living areas and bedrooms was well-positioned for the sun and the semi-rural outlook. The complex concrete elements and roof structure had been constructed with precision, and the exterior cladding had been beautifully fitted. The tiling and wall finishes, which have been installed to a very high standard, also deserve a special mention.

The Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition recognises the very best homes, builders and craftsmen across New Zealand. This year the regional competition had almost 350 entries across 11 regions.
