Activists have chained themselves to silos on a battery hen farm near Pukekohe, as protestors in chicken suits wave placards outside.
Coalition to End Factory Farming activists Deirdre Sims and Marie Brittain want to draw attention to factory farming and have been at the farm overnight, chained to seven-metre high silos.
It
was heartbreaking to see row upon row of caged hens unable to carry out the most basic natural behaviours such as wing stretching and walking, Ms Sims said.
Ms Sims said the action was not aimed at that particular farm, at Tuakau, 10km south of Pukekohe, but at the entire egg industry.
``The egg industry is proposing to introduce colony cages as a replacement for existing battery cages. But a cage is a cage no matter how the Egg Producers Federation tries to spin it.''
Police arrived at the farm this morning after receiving a call reporting about 20 protestors outside the farm, waving placards and wearing chicken costumes.
``There is no drama, no issues, we are just trying to get to the bottom of what they want. We are having a chat and sorting it out,'' shift commander Matt Rogers told NZPA.
The owners of the farm could not be immediately reached for comment.
