Hastings police are asking residents to check their security cameras after an early-morning stabbing left a man fighting for his life in hospital.

Police were called to the incident at an address in the Karamu Rd North area of Hastings about 3.25am on Saturday.

At the address, officers found a man with severe injuries.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Karli Whiu said police immediately provided first aid before paramedics transported him to hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains in a critical condition.

She said the alleged offender had fled the scene before police arrived.

At 6am on Saturday police got information about a man “hiding” at a property on Mayfair Ave, not far from where the stabbing happened, she said.

Whiu said the man was found by police and arrested without further incident.

He was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and has been remanded in custody.

Police are now searching for security camera footage from residents in the surrounding area that may have captured information between the time of the incident and the man’s arrest.

Whiu said police were asking residents to carefully check the time settings on their cameras, including any daylight‑savings adjustments, to ensure footage covered the relevant period.

Whiu also asked local residents to check their properties for any items that may have been discarded by the alleged offender.

Anyone with information is asked to make a report at 105.police.govt.nz, or by calling 105, using the reference number 260207/3403. Alternatively, information can also be shared anonymously through Crime Stoppers, by calling 0800 555 111.
