"By putting yourself in a high-pressure performance situation these kids develop a skill that will serve them well in many aspects of life."
Her team aims to open up a world that's both fascinating and involving so children aren't just observing but are a crucial part of what makes the production a success.
"Knowing I'm creating opportunities for kids who wouldn't otherwise imagine themselves having access to those opportunities is a great feeling."
Ms Pierard said she will use her "slightly enforced rest" this Christmas as a distancing opportunity in the lead-up to the big opera over Art Deco Weekend in February 2016.
Nominator Sarah Walmsley said Ms Pierard is a creative inspiration in Hawke's Bay: "She not only performs regularly for local audiences, but also dedicates a huge amount of time to Hawke's Bay school students."
In just a few short years the project has achieved great success, broadening horizons for scores of students, Ms Walmsley said.
"She is completely deserving of the title of Hawke's Bay Today person of the year."
Ms Walmsley said Ms Pierard has a truly creative mind.
"She can envision the most amazing things at a moment's notice, making everything she is involved in a feast for the senses."
