A man is in a moderate condition after crashing a car several metres down a bank on the Napier-Taupo Rd.

Police were notified of the crash on State Highway 5 near Te Pohue at 1.10pm on Thursday.

The person was taken by rescue helicopter to Hawke's Bay Hospital after receiving treatment from St John ambulance staff at the scene.

A Hawke's Bay DHB spokeswoman said a man in his 20s is currently being assessed by hospital staff.
