Alastair Scott
Current MP for Wairarapa - National
Why should people vote for you?
I like helping people and interacting with them. We have helped many constituents over the past three years on various issues including immigration, parental custody, ACC, flooding streams, charitable trusts, access to health services, education requirements, ECE and many more. I have 30 years of business experience, running my own wine business from Masterton and helping and managing many small and large businesses. I have a blended family of six children and lived overseas. I chose to come back to live in the fantastic country of New Zealand
What is the single most pressing need in your electorate?
There are more jobs than people. We need more people to discover Wairarapa. We can then build larger parking areas at train stations (happening already), fill the classrooms, create a stronger local economy which provides opportunity for our younger people. People are already arriving and making a big difference to the entire electorate, but we can do with more.
What's your top strength for this role?
My ability to get on with people. I like people and can communicate and understand their issues. I have a lot of experience in bringing up a family, running a business and working in the not for profit sector.
Who's your most respected New Zealand politician (living or dead) and why?
I like the idea of having dinner with Keith Holyoake. He loved communicating and being with the people of New Zealand, dropping in on people's homes and staying for dinner because he wanted to understand and soak up what was good about New Zealand. He listened.
What's the biggest risk you've ever taken?
I have taken lots of risks, but always risks that are thought through and managed. Always have a plan B so if the risk that is taken fails, the downside is limited and known.
