Mr Gough said it was "pretty cool" for Hawke's Bay to get the nationals.
"It has previously been, for most cyclists, probably their most memorable racing within New Zealand due to the amazing atmosphere over the last couple of years," he said.
"I still see Hawke's Bay as being the home of cycling - the pathways, the best road riding, the awesome climate. Getting the nationals is a huge step in the right direction for our region to live up to that statement.
"We are now responsible for making that atmosphere that Christchurch has done so well to produce over the years. It's great to see the council truly embracing the event."
The event will take in some of the best scenery in Hawke's Bay including Marine Parade, the Napier Hill and the historic Church Road Winery in Taradale.
In addition to the serious stuff, recreational riders will have the opportunity to enter the "Flying Lap" - a chance to ride part of the course.
Former professional road cyclist and New Zealand champion Julian Dean has also been confirmed as the event ambassador.
"Julian has represented New Zealand for years and is keen to help promote not only the event, but also the many health benefits that cycling provides," added Mr Jack.
Hawke's Bay Tourism general manager Annie Dundas said that any event that showcases the Hawke's Bay region is a win.
"We are delighted to host events such as this that bring new money to the region," she said.
