Mongrel Mob members and other mourners are descending on the crash scene that claimed the lives of three gang members on Saturday.

Reporters on the scene say gang members were visibly distraught after peering over the bank where a car carrying four men plunged 150m down a bank and into the Mohaka River, off SH5, about mid afternoon.

Police plan to use an Air Force helicopter to winch the car wreck free from the river. The helicopter was yet to arrive.

Livestock was being moved from a nearby paddock to enable the Air Force to lower the car once it had been salvaged.

The lone surviving male has since been discharged from hospital.
