One of Hawke's Bay's boutique wineries, where the winemaker juggles the task with her motherhood role, is staging an open day tomorrow.
Emma Lowe and her husband Marcello set up Monowai Estate in 2002 in Crownthorpe and have forged a strong reputation for producing fine chardonnays, pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, merlot and pinot noir.
From a young age, Ms Lowe had a vision of starting her own vineyard and worked around the world building up knowledge and skills.
She and her husband, from Chile, set up Monowai on the river terraces of Crownthorpe - they gave it the name as it means "one water", which the couple see as the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and Chile.
They produced their first wines in 2005 and the label was launched in 2007.
Their 2013 merlots and pinot gris have received 4 and 4.5 star ratings from leading wine writers.
The couple wanted to stage something special to launch their 2015 rose, so decided to stage an open day on Saturday at their Matapiro Rd winery between 10am-4pm. Monowai tasting and winery tours, along with fine food and live entertainment, are on the menu.
