The northbound lane of State Highway 2 near Tangoio, 23km north of Napier, was blocked earlier today after a logging truck slid into a roadside ditch.

A police spokesperson said police were notified at 8.09am.

The accident, on SH2 near Tangoio Settlement Rd, had blocked one lane. Motorists were being asked to pass with care.

The police spokesperson said there were no reports of any injuries.

Police finished the job at about 10.30am and the road is no longer blocked.

The same road was fully then partially closed for more than five hours after a crash between a truck and car in August.

This week, November 9-15, is Road Safety Week. Communities across the country are calling for safer streets after a survey by Brake, the road safety charity, shows almost a third of respondents feel at risk from road danger on their street.

Initial results from Brake's "How safe is your street?" survey revealed that a third of people feel at risk from road danger on their street. More than a third say vehicles travel too fast and a quarter say it isn't safe to cycle.

In 2019, 352 people were killed on NZ roads, including 13 cyclists and 31 pedestrians. As of November 8, 269 people have been killed, compared to 285 at the same time last year, despite the Covid-19 lockdowns when less traffic was on the road.

In Hawke's Bay, as of November 8, 19 people have died compared to 15 in the 2019 year to date.

This year's campaign by Brake, and sponsored by QBE Insurance and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, has the theme "Step Up for Safe Streets".
