The Hastings Postie store has closed after the clothing chain was bought by an international retailer.

Postie Plus Group Ltd chief executive Richard Binns said the Hastings store had been closed on Thursday last week.

On Friday, the assets of the former Postie Plus Company were bought by international retailer Pepkor.

Mr Binns said the sale spanned 64 Postie stores.

Four of those stores, including the one in Hastings, needed to reach agreements on commercial costs as part of the sale.

"We couldn't reach a commercial agreement with the landlord in time.

"But we are committed to Hastings and as soon as the right location becomes available, we will be keen to go back there."

Asked if the staff employed at the Hastings Postie store would be moved to a new store, Mr Binns said "they [the staff] have left the business".

Hastings Postie staff members still at the store yesterday said they were "packing up".

The closure of the Hastings store comes after the Dannevirke Postie store was also closed, causing the loss of four jobs.

The Hastings store employed seven staff members.

Pepkor has more than 3000 retail stores in 13 countries.
