A man invaded a Napier home with a hammer in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A man brandishing a hammer stormed the bedroom of a young couple in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man then drove away at high speed and crashed into a tree stump, leaving damaged parts behind.

Police believe the parts belong to a dark Toyota Rav4.

The car will have moderate damage to its front left bumper.

The man was covering his face with a bandana when he broke into the Napier house about 5.30am.
