Hawke's Bay Today's sports editor was lauded at last night's Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards in Auckland.
Anendra Singh won the Garry Frew Memorial Trophy, for outstanding contribution to provincial sports journalism, as well as the NZSJA Award for Best Provincial/Community Journalist.
The gongs, sponsored by Sport NewZealand, were announced at the TP McLean Awards Dinner at the Novotel Ellerslie Hotel, Auckland.
More than 135 entries were received across the 10 categories.
The other finalists in Mr Singh's category for best provincial journalist were Cameron Leslie from the Northern Advocate and Daniel Silverton from Times Newspapers.
Awards organiser Armin Lindenberg said Mr Singh's trophy was "well deserved".
Mr Singh said he was honoured to receive the awards, particularly the Garry Frew Memorial Trophy, as he had worked with Mr Frew at the Northern Advocate before he died.
"People would go home and Garry would still be working at midnight. In many ways I'm like Garry Frew.
"I've got to give this to my family. There have been times I've sacrificed time with family to put the readers first."
Hawke's Bay Today editor Andrew Austin said Mr Singh was a worthy recipient of both awards. "Anendra is passionate about sport and works very hard to bring our readers the best sports coverage in the Bay."
