Once Napier in-line skating ace Tom Scofield got airborne at Sk8 Zone on Marine Parade the Open Street Style Elite competition came down to who was going to come second.
Defending the national title which he picked up last year, he had the crowds gasping in awe at the New Zealand
Roller Blading Championships last Saturday - and achieved something Sk8 Zone manager Pat McIvor said had been achieved by only one other skater in the world.
A daring 1260-degree aerial spin ... a remarkable three-and-a-half times around ... and around and around.
"It was amazing skating," Mr McIvor said, and it had set Mr Scofield up pretty well for his planned tilt at the Australian championships early next year.
Hastings skater Matt Walters also had success, taking out the Open Half Pipe event in front of two more Bay skaters, Percy Ahuriri, of Napier, and Kyle Hamilton, of Hastings.
Under-16 Street Style went to Palmerston North's Brandon Drummond, from Jordan Marsh and Armarni Murtagh, both of Napier.
Another Palmerston North skater, Scott Brindle, bagged the Open Street Style title, with Wellington's Ryan Roulston in second place.
At the end of the event a special award was given out to 8-year-old Napier skater Blake Ross, who was to have competed in the under-13 division. But not enough skaters entered for the division to be run, so he skated in the under-16s.
"Blake skated really well and almost landed a huge front flip."
His efforts brought him a special prize and medal.
