Jack, Theodore, and Harper have topped the list of the most popular Hawke’s Bay baby names for 2024.

The Department of Internal Affairs has released the annual list of the most popular names of children born last year, revealing regional and national trends.

While Noah was the top-picked boy’s name across New Zealand and the North Island, with 250 babies sharing the name, Hawke’s Bay followed the South Island trend where Jack took the top spot.

In the Bay, 10 babies were named Jack in 2024, tied with another name, Theodore.

Laura Hyde’s youngest son, born on May 28 at Hawke’s Bay Hospital in Hastings, is one of the Bay’s little Theodores.

Affectionately called Teddy, his full name is Theodore Terrence Paterson, a name chosen for him because it is steeped in family history.

“Theodore is my grandpop’s name on my dad’s side and his second name, Terrence, is my grandad’s name on my mum’s side,” Laura said.

Born via emergency c-section at 35 weeks and six days, Teddy spent 10 days in the Special Care Baby Unit where Laura said he shared the space with another Theodore who had been born a couple of days earlier.

For girls, Harper topped the list, with eight parents choosing that name, including Sam Hastings, who welcomed her little Harper at the end of August.

The name was chosen from a shortlist during the parents’ road trip.

“We were both in love with the name Harper. We also didn’t know anyone with that name,” Hastings said.

She had no idea that Harper would become the most popular girl’s name in Hawke’s Bay, but for her, there was never any other option.

The family had already personalised blankets, muslin bunny comforters, and a baby book with Harper’s name embroidered on them.

“Far too invested to change her name if she didn’t look like a Harper when she was born,” Hastings said.

“Harper is full of smiles, blows lots of raspberries and is definitely finding her voice.”

The 2023 list featured a different set of favourites, with George, Hudson, Leo, Levi, Mason, and Oliver leading for boys and Matilda and Mila topping the list for girls.

For 2024, Mila still made the top 10, ranking 7th with six babies registered with that name.

Harper, now the most popular girl’s name, was 9th on the 2023 list.

Popular Māori baby names are released separately around Matariki, the Māori new year.

Minister of Internal Affairs Hon Brooke van Velden said families should register their babies within the first two months of birth.

“SmartStart, a platform hosted by the Department of Internal Affairs, is a quick and free way to do this. It also has guidance for families about their children’s first years, including information about what services and assistance may be available to families.”
