Hawke's Bay UFO mystery solved

Bright lights seen over Hastings on Saturday have been confirmed as Chinese lanterns, released from Parkvale.
A German playgroup celebrating mid-winter released the lanterns, which are paper and contain a candle to heat and lift the lanterns into the air.
The Chinese lanterns were not traditional for the German festival but the low fire risk and opportunity for the children, aged 3 to 7, to enjoy them inspired the group to end their celebration by releasing the lanterns.
