The survey will help shape understanding of the needs of people in the community who are affected by family violence.

The organisation that runs the Hastings and Napier Women’s Refuge is calling on the Hawke’s Bay community to take part in a short, anonymous survey to give them a better understanding of local experiences and the perceptions of family violence.

Business manager of Family VIP Services Julie Hart said the survey will help gather real, local information so they can continue to match their support to the needs of people in the community who are affected by family violence.

“Every voice matters.”

The service provides vital support, advocacy, and safe accommodation for women, men, and children affected by family violence across Hawke’s Bay.

It offers 24/7 crisis response, safe house services, community advocacy and support, and education programmes to support women, male victims and families to build safe, stable lives free from violence.

“We want to hear from as many people as possible, not just those directly affected, but anyone who has witnessed or been aware of family violence in our region.”

She said the more that can be learnt, the better they can shape their services and community response.

The data gathered will inform future programmes and prevention initiatives delivered by Family VIP Services.

Responses are completely confidential, and the survey takes less than five minutes to complete.

Hart said it was about building a true picture of what’s happening in homes and communities.

“We know family violence affects so many people in our community — and we can’t begin to change it until we know more around what is actually happening, right here on our doorstep."

She said there were people who do not call the police for a range of different reasons, and also, there are people in the community who don’t know where they can go to for help.

“Last year we followed up with 417 Police referrals and had nearly 250 other referrals through our service.”

Hart said she knew there were a lot more women and men affected by violence, who needed support, but for a range of very different reasons, they did not reach out for help.

“This survey offers everyone a chance to anonymously tell their story and tell us what they need and how we can support them.”

Residents across Hawke’s Bay are encouraged to complete the survey before November 30.
