  • Two Hawke’s Bay student teams will represent NZ at the World Robotics Championships in the US in April 2025.
  • The teams from Havelock North schools won national titles, earning spots among the top 0.5% globally.
  • They seek financial support for travel and accommodation, inviting community contributions and sponsorships.

Two teams of students from Hawke’s Bay have achieved success in national robotics competitions and are now set to represent New Zealand at the world championships in the US next year.

The first team of six students from Havelock North High School and Havelock North Intermediate competed and triumphed in the national First Lego League Robotics competition in Auckland.

Their performance at the competition earned the team the national championship title and the chance to compete on the global stage.

They will join the top 0.5% of teams worldwide who qualify. There, they will represent New Zealand as the Blackbots.

The second team, consisting of six students from Havelock North High School, earned the Inspire Award at the First Tech Challenge National championships in Hawke’s Bay, after finishing as runners-up at the event.

This award recognises teams that embody the spirit of the competition through their outstanding performance, teamwork and community outreach.

Their efforts have also earned them a spot at the First World Championships, where they will compete alongside the best teams in the world.

First’s global competition is a robotics programme that introduces science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to students through engaging and hands-on learning.

Participants solve real-world challenges by designing and programming robots to complete tasks related to an annual theme.

This year’s theme of “submerged” encouraged teams to explore life beneath the ocean’s surface and develop innovative solutions for healthier oceans.

Ricardo Fox from First NZ said he and his team was incredibly proud of these students and their dedication to STEM education.

“Their success is a testament to the hard work and creativity they have put into these competitions.

“We are excited to see them represent New Zealand in Houston and wish them the best of luck.”

The international event in Houston, Texas, brings together the best teams from around the world, providing an opportunity for these young innovators to showcase their skills and learn from global peers.

To make this journey possible, both teams will need financial support to cover travel, accommodation, and other expenses.

Both Havelock North High School and Intermediate are inviting Hawke’s Bay community members, businesses, and organisations to help these students compete on the world stage.

Any contributions, sponsorship, or donations can be made by contacting the schools.
