A crash on Park Rd South in Hastings early Monday morning saw one person taken to Hawke’s Bay Hospital with serious injuries.
Police responded to reports of a crash in the Hastings suburb of Akina involving two vehicles at about 12.30am. One vehicle was said to have crashed into a tree after hitting the other.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said an ambulance was sent to the scene and transported one patient to Hawke’s Bay Hospital in a serious condition.
A police spokesperson said the road was slightly blocked while emergency services responded, but it was clear soon after.
Two Matariki events cancelled in advance of rain
Two water events to mark Matariki, one set to be held at the recently opened Hastings Waiaroha Water Centre, have been cancelled due to impending wet weather.
A special hīkoi of remembrance at the Waiaroha Water Centre on June 25 and 26 from 6pm to 9pm each evening will no longer be held.
Hastings District Council said there was still an opportunity to celebrate Matariki at the Kai Hau Kai Matariki on June 28 at Mitre10 Regional Sports Park, where people could feast on kai and be amazed by entertainment and fireworks.
A Matariki-inspired event planned for Wednesday evening (June 19) in Flaxmere was also cancelled. The Pools of Matariki Tapuapua event was scheduled to be held at Flaxmere Park but has been cancelled due to forecasted poor weather.
Craggy Range young viticulturist wins second title
Annika Salenjus, from Craggy Range Winery in Hastings, has won the 2024 Wairarapa Young Viticulturist of the Year award for a second year running.
Salenjus claimed the win following the competition held at Escarpment Winery in Martinborough on June 20, where she also won the BioStart Hortisports section.
Contestants were tested on nutrition, trellising, pests and diseases, budgeting, machinery, wine knowledge, and interview skills.
Salenjus will return to Escarpment on Wednesday, August 28, when winners from around the country will compete for the overall title of 2024 Young Viticulturist of the Year.
Armed Offenders Squad training in Hastings
The Hawke’s Bay Armed Offenders Squad will train at a Kaiapo Rd address in Camberley, Hastings, this Wednesday.
The training will include the use of blank rounds and stun grenades, so people may also hear loud bangs coming from the vicinity.
According to Eastern District Police, all training will occur inside buildings, but people may notice police vehicles parked on the street, and signage will be in place.
“Please be assured this is no cause for alarm,” a police Facebook post said.
Central Hawke’s Bay author and storyteller Mary Kippenberger and veteran community activist Denis O’Reilly from Waiohiki will help the audience lift their eyes to Aotearoa’s future with a talk entitled ‘Imagining Matariki 2050′.
Doors open at 6.30pm at St Matthew’s on King St South. The talk starts at 7pm and the evening will conclude by 9pm.
The audience will have the opportunity to put forward written questions to be addressed during a panel discussion on each of the four evenings.

The series of free Treaty forums continues fortnightly on Thursday nights, alternating between Napier and Hastings.
Tararua District Council seeking community views on bylaws
Tararua District Council is seeking community views on updated bylaws.
A number of Council’s bylaws that were last updated in 2018 are now due for review.
During July Tararua District Council will be seeking the community’s views on proposed amendments.
This includes the Keeping of Animals Bylaw, the Alcohol Bylaw, the Cemeteries Bylaw, and the Public Places Bylaw
Residents will be able to pick up a copy of the statement of proposal, draft bylaw, and submission form from any of Tararua Districts Council’s libraries or customer service centres, or download them from the Tararua District Council website from 1 July 2024.
The submission period runs from 1 July 2024 to 31 July 2024.
Local Lotto players get lucky in second division
Seventeen Lotto players have each won $15,383 with second division prizes in Saturday night’s Lotto draw, with three of those winning tickets sold in Hawke’s Bay.
One of the winning second division tickets was sold at the New World Hastings and two more online MyLotto players from Hawke’s Bay will collect the prize.
Anyone who bought their ticket from any of the above stores should check their ticket as soon as possible in-store, on MyLotto, or through the MyLotto App.
Applications are opening for youth grants up to $1000 from Hastings Youth Council.
Individuals, groups/organisations and Youth Enterprise Scheme businesses can apply for funding from Monday June 24 until August 5.
The funding is intended to assist with the costs of representing the region at national sporting competitions, attending tournaments or conferences, purchasing equipment to meet goals, starting a new career or job, starting a small business or getting a Young Enterprise Scheme business on its feet.
Funding applications above $400 may be asked for an in-person/digital interview, while those applying for an amount below $400 will be considered equally.
Overnight SH2 closures planned for next month

A stretch of State Highway 2 between Whirinaki and Tutira will be closing for three nights in July for recovery work.
The state highway, between Tutira Store and Whirinaki, will be closed from 9pm to 5am each night between Monday July 15 and Thursday July 18. The road will be open from 5am on Thursday July 18.
Work is to allow the Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) to resurface the road at Devil’s Elbow, blast rocks in the area and complete drainage and culvert work at Devil’s Elbow and Tangoio.
Guard rails will also be installed.
Road closure signs will be posted at Tutira Store north of the closure and at Whirinaki south of the closure.
Residents will have access between Whirinaki and Tangoio Settlement Road and between Tutira Store and Waikoau Road.
