New lifejacket libraries across Hawke’s Bay aim to keep people afloat this summer without the need to spend a cent.

The free new initiative, a collaboration between ACC and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Harbourmaster’s Office, aims to improve water safety.

A council spokesperson said ACC had approached the council, which had “jumped at the opportunity”.

“If you’re out enjoying the water – on a boat, kayak, paddleboard, or doing another water activity, you need a properly fitting lifejacket,” the spokesperson said.

“Anyone can borrow one. We record their details, and each lifejacket is signed out at the time of issue and signed back in when returned.

“There’s been lots of positive feedback, so we are planning to continue running it in the future.”

The libraries include a range of sizes for adults and children, with people on-site to help with fittings.

Regional Council harbourmaster Adrian Wright said enjoying the water safely and coming home to whānau should always be the focus.

“Everyone heads out on the water looking forward to a good day and getting home safely,” Wright said.

“Being prepared and making good decisions is what helps make that happen, especially in Hawke’s Bay, where conditions can change quickly.”

He said before heading out, people should check gear, know the rules and make sure their vessel is safe.

“Remember that life jackets save lives, carry two forms of waterproof communication, and check the weather before you leave and while you’re on the water.

“If you’re the skipper, the responsibility for everyone’s safety starts with you – make sure your crew is prepared, and you have everything you need. Just like on the road, the water has rules too, so skippers must understand them before heading out.”

Regional Council chair Sophie Siers said boating safety was a key council responsibility and an important part of keeping communities safe over summer.

“Our role is to manage maritime safety in Hawke’s Bay and that includes making sure people have the information and education they need to enjoy the water safely,” Siers said.

“At the same time, we all need to play our part. Taking personal responsibility is equally important.”
