The first small, inner-city green space to be funded from the sale of Nelson Park has been opened in Hastings.
Mayor Lawrence Yule formally opened the small square on Warren St, named Landmarks Square, on Monday.
The name recognises the Landmarks Trust, which works to create civic pride and community identity throughencouraging quality architecture, landscape, history and art in public places.
The square also honours former Hastings Mayor, the late Jeremy Dwyer, who was the driving force behind the Landmarks Trust.
A plaque at the square recognises his input into the beautification of Hastings.
The plaque was unveiled on Monday by Mr Yule and Mr Dwyer's widow, Marilyn Dwyer.
"The opening of the square marks a significant step forward with plans to make Hastings' CBD an even better place to visit and shop," Mr Yule said.
Landmarks Square includes a greened feature wall, an industrial-steel shade structure, a mix of paved, grassed and planted areas, lighting, public seating and a water fountain.
It's the first small-scale park to be built in Hastings from a fund set aside from the sale of Nelson Park, which is being developed into a retail complex. Land has been bought opposite the Hastings RSA for the next park development.
