Christmas "wishing" trees symbolising hope for kiwi families who can not afford the luxury of presents, went up in Kmart stores around the country this week.
This is the 16th year that the annual Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has collected presents for underprivileged families, and people are invited get along toKmart in Hastings and place a present under the tree.
"We put the tree up on Tuesday and we have got about 100 presents already," Hastings Kmart Wishing Tree organiser Rhoda Lodge said.
"Last year we got 1500 so I want to get more this year."
The gift does not have to be purchased at a Kmart store but it does need a gift tag to identify the age and gender of the suitable recipient. "It is just a way to help all the underprivileged families around Hawke's Bay to have an enjoyable Christmas," Ms Lodge said. With the number of families seeking assistance from the Salvation Army at an all time high this year, Christmas time will be particularly difficult for many.
"This year's appeal is almost certainly the most important we've held to-date, given the continued tough economic times and the extent of need within our communities," Kmart New Zealand Manager Sue Smith said.
Kmart is hoping for a record number of gifts to be placed under the Wishing Tree between now and Christmas Eve, which will then be distributed to families across Hawke's Bay by the Salvation Army.
"I think it makes us all value the gift of giving, it shouldn't be about us, it's a good feeling to give to others, even if it is in a small way," Salvation Army community ministries team leader Chris Morgan said.
If you would rather make a cash donation, you can do so at a sales point in any Kmart store or go to www.kmart.co.nz/wishingtree.
